The Joy of Music Youth Orchestra (JYO) offers an exhilarating orchestral experience for advanced string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players. If you're eager to enhance your musicianship and enjoy the camaraderie of playing in a full orchestra, JYO is the place for you!
Now in its 27th season, JYO has evolved from a small ensemble of fewer than 10 musicians meeting in the basement of Worcester’s First Unitarian Church to a 40-piece orchestra rehearsing in the beautiful Shapiro Concert Hall. This growth is a testament to the dedication of our students, the expertise of our faculty, and the supportive community that JOMP fosters.
JYO focuses on:
JYO kicked off the ’25–’26 season with a festive holiday concert featuring works by Mozart, Vaughan Williams, Holst, Leroy Anderson, and music from The Polar Express. The performance showcased the orchestra’s versatility and seasonal spirit, bringing together students and community members for a joyful celebration. JYO has also performed its annual spring concert at Worcester’s iconic Mechanics Hall for over a decade, a testament to the ensemble’s longstanding presence in the community.
In addition to its two annual concerts, this season featured a special Orchestra Residency Week with world-renowned violinist Midori in March 2026. Through her Orchestra Residencies Program (ORP), Midori and her team led workshops and rehearsals focused on musical collaboration, community engagement, and artistic growth. The week culminated in a public performance on March 7, featuring Midori as soloist with JYO - an unforgettable experience for both students and audience members.
As part of a community music school, JYO is mostly un-auditioned and teacher-recommended, yet the level of musicianship is often remarkably high. This is due to the rigorous training provided by JOMP’s private lesson faculty and the expert leadership of our music director and conductor, Timothy Terranella. Many JYO members encourage their friends to join, leading to a vibrant, growing ensemble.
We understand that financial constraints can be a barrier to pursuing musical education. That’s why JYO offers grant-funded scholarships based on need, ensuring that all motivated young musicians have the opportunity to participate. These scholarships are crucial to maintaining the diversity and vibrancy of our orchestra, allowing students from all backgrounds to grow as musicians.
Whether you're a seasoned orchestral player or new to the full orchestra experience, we encourage you to apply and take advantage of this support. JYO is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where every student can thrive.
