Musical Fantasies
This program explores music’s ability to transport us to different worlds. Each piece offers a glimpse into the imagination of its composer. Through expressive melodies and inventive transformations, these works allow us to experience music as a reflection of possibility and creativity.
Valerie Coleman’s Fanmi Imèn celebrates the shared humanity that connects us all, drawing inspiration from musical traditions around the world to envision a world united through our common experiences. Malcolm Arnold’s Fantasy for Solo Flute, part of a larger collection of solo works for various instruments, explores the expressive and technical possibilities of the flute, challenging the performer to push beyond familiar boundaries. Clara Schumann’s Three Romances reflect her own musical voice while developing on the romantic musical language she shared with her husband, Robert Schumann. Finally, Schubert’s Introduction and Variations on a Theme of “Trockne Blumen” takes a simple melody and reimagines it through a series of increasingly imaginative variations, revealing the many possibilities hidden within a single musical idea.
Together, these works celebrate the power of imagination to transform a single idea into an entire world of musical expression.
Featuring JOMP teachers in concert from jazz to classical, this series is presented free of charge with a suggested donation of $25 to benefit JOMP's Tuition Assistance Fund. Donations in any amount are welcome. All concerts will be held in the Shapiro Concert Hall at 1 Gorham St., Worcester, MA.
