Jazz has been a vibrant part of the JOMP experience since the 1990’s. Before the pandemic, we typically had 3 to 5 jazz ensembles every year with groups performing at many community events and festivals as well as at JOMP. Now we are in a rebuilding mode and are eager to help a new crop of young musicians discover and explore the joyful sounds of jazz, the thrill of improvising in a group, and the excitement of being able to make up your own music on the spot.
This summer's workshop will focus on combo playing rather than a big band with an emphasis on developing improvisational skills. A variety of jazz styles will be explored, including Swing, Bebop, Latin Jazz, and World Jazz (including odd meters). Although some basic theory will be included, the focus will be on learning through playing.
Students will be placed into group(s) based on experience and level of playing. All levels and ages welcome.
