Jung-Yi Alice Hsieh Daugherty

Having been trained by the Yamaha music school in keyboard when she was in preschool, Alice inherited a natural feel for music teaching of the comprehensive elements of music with her mother: listen, sing, play, read and compose. Immediately upon completion of her Bachelor of Art and Elementary Education Degree, she was appointed flute and piano faculty at the Yamaha Music Education School and the Kawai Music Education School in Taiwan. She has since served on the faculty of Zen Music Center, Song of the Songs Music School, Fort Lee Music School and Fantasia Music.

Alice has coached for the Judith Mendenhall flute masterclasses for chamber music abroad. As a performer, Alice is an award-winning flutist and has ranked at events including multiple Taipei Music Competitions, the Jui-Shin Music Competition for solo flute and flute duets, was the Concerto Competition winner at the National Sun-Yat-Sen University and performed in Kaohsiung Culture Center in Taiwan. Additionally, she was a finalist in the 2009 Kousseyitzky Young Artist Awards and was a Prize Winner of the 2011 Alexander & Buono International Flute Competition.

Alice’s musical abilities allowed her to earn a scholarship to attend the National Sun Yat-Sen University where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and was Principal Flute of the orchestra for four consecutive years. Alice is an active member of several ensembles and has performed Orchestral works at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space and the Chang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and Kaohsiung Culture Center in Taiwan. Alice was invited to perform for the Consulate General of France in New York City, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York City and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC for the Japan Cherry Blossom Festival.

She earned a Master of Music Degree and Professional Studies Diploma from Mannes College the New School for Music in New York City where she received a scholarship and studied with Judith Mendenhall, Principal Flute of the American Ballet Theater and Keith Underwood, Flute Player of the New York Philharmonic and The Late Show with David Letterman. For the piano, she studied with Donald Pirone, Professor at Queens College City University of New York and Michael Oelbaum, Mannes College of Music.  Alice teaches also in the Auburn Public Schools and at Pakachoag Music School.  She joined the Joy of Music faculty in the fall of 2017.
