The strong connection between movement and the development of listening skills and a good musical ear makes these classes an important element of musical growth. The classes are designed to enhance the development of our students’ musicianship by exploring the elements of music such as rhythm, shape, stillness, energy and expression through improvisation and creative interaction with the other children and their teacher. They are also designed for girls and boys to enjoy together. ******************************************************************************************** Dance-a-Story ~ ages 5 and 6 Instructor: Anne Edgerton Monday 4:00 - 4:45 Tuition $410 ($205) Classes will be based on the stories and themes presented in a series of specially chosen children’s books. After a book is read, the students will explore and recreate the story through music and movement. For example, each character might be given its own musical theme and characteristic way of moving. The number of weeks spent on each story will depend on how involved the children get with their interpretation. Throughout the series, the students will explore many aspects of creative dance and musical awareness, including locomotor movements, qualities of movement, the use of phrases and motifs in music and dance, and the cooperative nature of group interaction. At the end of last year the children created and danced their own story.

Through stretching, creative exercises, improvisation and use of props, children will be introduced to basic dance technique and movement. They will also learn to work co-operatively as they experience the excitement of creating their own dances together.

Students will focus on stretching, alignment, body dynamics and basic dance technique at a more advanced level. Rhythm, musical expression and interpretation will be emphasized as students apply these skills in experiencing a variety of dance styles and exploring dance composition and choreography.

This class is designed to tap into children’s creative energies and potential through movement and drama. Using children’s literature, music, and theatre games as a basis, students will create their own interpretations through individual and group improvisation and choreography.

******************************************************************************************** CHILDREN'S AND YOUTH CHORUSES ~ Instructor: Nan GibbonsExperience the power, beauty and fun of singing songs from around the world. Chorus members will learn and refine vocal techniques, paying special attention to breathing and blending with other voices. They will also build musicianship and listening skills as they explore the elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, pitch, timbre, etc.) Each chorus becomes a singing community as individual members discover and develop their own unique talents, support each others' gifts and create something greater together than they could alone. Children's Chorus will join with Youth Chorus for a Combined Chorus from 4:15 - 4:55. Youth Chorus will stay for their own rehearsal of more advanced repertoire until 5:30 Session 1 ~ 13 weeks Sept 16 - Dec 16 Concert (7:15 p.m.) Session 2 ~ 13 weeks Feb. 3 - May 12 Concert (7:15 p.m.)
